Advanced Water Treatment Facility Lead Operator

Job Objective

Reporting directly to the Chief Plant Operator and Operations Supervisor, the Lead Operator functions in a supervisory capacity while also performing operator duties. This role directs day-to-day operations of the AWTF facility, including influent pumping, ultrafiltration, reverse osmosis, UV advanced oxidation, and chemical systems.

The Lead Operator serves as the designated Operator-in-Charge in the absence of the CPO and is responsible for coordinating daily operations and maintenance in accordance with PERC Water’s safety procedures and QA/QC standards.

Principal Duties and Responsibilities

  • Oversee and perform operations and maintenance of an advanced wastewater treatment facility (UF, RO, UV AOP).
  • Serve as Designated Operator-in-Charge in the absence of the CPO.
  • Plan assignments with the CPO to ensure efficient workflow and task completion.
  • Assist with operating and regulatory reports; understand contractual obligations.
  • Coordinate and participate in daily operations, including:
    • Developing SOPs and training programs
    • Monitoring equipment and processes
    • Collecting and processing water samples
    • Managing chemical inventory
    • Maintaining and optimizing membrane systems
    • Utilizing data management and CMMS systems
  • Conduct training for operators and maintenance staff.
  • Maintain reports, logs, and documentation.
  • Inspect equipment and coordinate with maintenance and safety teams.
  • Participate in housekeeping and maintenance tasks (cleaning, painting, etc.).
  • Operate vehicles, forklifts, and equipment.
  • Follow all safety procedures and participate in safety training.
  • Troubleshoot and repair systems as needed.
  • Respond to plant emergencies when required.
  • Communicate issues to supervisors.
  • Maintain acceptable attendance per company standards.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Strong leadership and self-motivation.
  • Mechanical aptitude and manual dexterity.
  • Ability to use tools in wet conditions.
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Outlook, Word, and Excel.

Physical Requirements:

  • Standing, walking, sitting for extended periods.
  • Lifting up to 40 lbs.
  • Climbing stairs, ladders, and equipment (confined space work required).
  • Ability to work nights, weekends, holidays, and on-call shifts.

Mental Requirements:

  • Ability to read, write, and communicate effectively in English.

Education and Experience Requirements

  • Minimum Grade III Wastewater Operator or T-3 Water Treatment Certification (CA State Water Resources Control Board) – required.
  • Must obtain AWWA Advanced Water Treatment Grade 3 within 12 months.
  • CWEA Mechanical Technician certification (preferred).
  • Minimum 3 years supervisory experience.
  • Minimum 3 year's experience in water/wastewater operations.
  • Valid California driver’s license.
  • High School Diploma or GED required, college coursework or degree preferred.
  • Must work toward AWTO Grade 3 certification.
