THE VACANCY

Under general supervision, performs a variety of semi-skilled trade work involved in the construction, installation, operations, maintenance and repair of public streets, buildings, structures, facilities, systems, equipment and grounds. Performs other related work as required. The current vacancy is under the sewer division.

Distinguishing Features

This is an entry level class in the Maintenance Worker series. Incumbents of this class perform specific assignments of average difficulty in accordance with established policies and procedures. Initially, supervision and training are given in detail and as the incumbent becomes more capable, works with a higher degree of independence. Work in the class is distinguished from that of higher classes by the more routine nature of the work performed and by the lower level of technical sophistication required. Assignment specialties may include carpentry, plumbing, concrete work, street maintenance, sewer and storm water systems, traffic signals, or tree and landscape maintenance work. Actual responsibilities will vary according to assignment. Work may be performed under supervision, independently or with the assistance of helpers.

Essential Duties

1. Performs and assists in semi-skilled construction, maintenance and repair work; may perform general construction and street maintenance repair work.
2. Operates and maintains construction and maintenance equipment for a variety of construction and maintenance operations involving public facilities, streets, sidewalks, gutters, and storm drains; operates and maintains a variety of other equipment and tools including compressors or pneumatic tools.
3. Installs signs, traffic cones and barricades.
4. Performs rough and finished carpentry.
5. Performs semi-skilled electrical repair and maintenance work related to public buildings, traffic signals, waste and storm water systems, and other public facilities or operations.
6. Paints building surfaces, furniture, fixtures, signs, traffic control lines, etc.
7. Installs and repairs plumbing fixtures.
8. Operates and maintains a variety of waste and storm water systems pumps; cleans, excavates and/or repairs waste and storm water systems pipes.
9. Removes, forms, pours and finishes concrete.
10. Maintains sprinkler and irrigation systems and equipment.
11. Prunes and maintains trees and landscaped areas.
12. Maintains supplies, work records and logs.
13. Reads and interprets blueprints, specifications, maps and drawings.
14. Drives and operates heavy trucks and specialized vehicular equipment.
15. May provide direction and training to assigned staff.

WORKING CONDITIONS

• Work is primarily performed outdoors on City streets with regular exposure to varying weather conditions including heat, cold, rain, wind, and humidity.
• Frequent exposure to electrical and mechanical hazards, noise, dust, and fumes.
• Travel by City vehicle within City limits to City work sites, locations, and meetings to conduct work.
• May work alone or in proximity to others depending on task assignments.
• Required to wear appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE) as needed for various tasks.
• Subject to occasional emergency call-outs, including evenings, weekends, and holidays.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS

• Must possess physical strength and stamina to perform moderate to heavy physical labor for extended periods.
• Standing, walking, bending, stooping, crouching, climbing ladders, kneeling, and reaching overhead or below the waist.
• Lifting, carrying, pushing, and pulling tools, equipment, and materials typically weighing up to 50 pounds; heavier lifting may be required with assistance.
• Seeing to inspect detailed work and read instructions, gauges, or electronic displays.
• Dexterity of hands and fingers coordination to operate hand and power tools, computer equipment, and precision instruments.
• Hearing and speaking to hear alarms, signals, or verbal instructions in a noisy environment.
• Ability to work in confined spaces and outdoors in varying weather conditions.

Employment Standards

Education/Experience
Any combination equivalent to education and experience likely to provide the required knowledge and abilities. A typical way to obtain the knowledge and abilities would be:

Education: High School Diploma, GED, or equivalent.

Experience: Two years of semi-skilled public works, facilities or equipment maintenance or construction trades experience.

Desirable Experience with the maintenance of sewer and/or storm systems, plumbing experience, or entry level underground construction experience is desirable.

Knowledge
Knowledge of modern practices, procedures, equipment and tools used in semi-skilled trade work and in related construction and maintenance; safe work practices and procedures.

Ability
Ability to perform a variety of semi-skilled construction, maintenance and repair related work including carpentry, plumbing, electrical and concrete work, tree and landscape maintenance, traffic painting, and waste and storm water systems; operate heavy trucks, specialized vehicular equipment, and other related tools and equipment; read and interpret blueprints, maps and drawings; use spray equipment and restricted chemicals; maintain accurate records; communicate effectively; establish and maintain effective working relationships with employees and the general public; provide lead direction and training to subordinate employees.

Special Requirements
Willingness and ability to respond to after-hours emergency calls as required.

Other Requirements
Possession of a valid California Driver's License and satisfactory driving record as a condition of initial and continued employment.

Selection Process
The examination process may include an application and supplemental questionnaire evaluation, a written exam, a practical exam, and an oral interview. The examination process may test for, but is not limited to, the essential knowledge and abilities listed in the job specification and announcement and will be designed to provide a comprehensive review of each candidate's technical knowledge and overall suitability for the position. Qualified applicants will be notified of the exact date, time, and location of examinations approximately two weeks in advance.

Candidates passing all components of the examination process will be placed on an Eligible List. A list of names is certified to the department(s) having vacancies based on the type of examination conducted pursuant to the provision of the City's Civil Service Rules. Final selection will be made from the Eligible List by the Department Head subject to approval by the City Manager. The Department Head may utilize additional selection procedures to make a final hiring decision. Placement on an Eligible List does not guarantee employment. Prior to appointment, a thorough reference check will be conducted which may include a credit check and background. The selection process may be evaluated and revised based on the number of qualified applicants. Federal law requires that prior to employment, you must furnish proof of your identity and eligibility for employment in the United States, as required by the U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services.

E-Verify
The City of Alameda utilizes the Federal government's E-Verify program and new employees must provide documentation to establish both identity and work authorization, which includes showing a valid United States Social Security card at the time of hire (photocopies not accepted).

Veteran's Preference Credit
A job applicant qualifies as a veteran if honorably discharged from active military, reservist, or National Guard duty of at least 18 consecutive months within the past five (5) years of the date of application. In case of discharge attributable to service-connected injuries or illnesses, the 18 months active-duty requirement need not be fulfilled.
