The Public Works Department's Wastewater Utilities Division oversees the operation and maintenance of wastewater collection, treatment, disposal and recycled water distribution systems throughout the San Luis Obispo County. The Wastewater Systems Superintendent is the managing operator and administrator of all wastewater systems through subordinate personnel, receiving general direction from and reporting to the Wastewater Utilities Division Manager. This position manages the chief plant operators, supervising wastewater system operators, wastewater system operators, and administrative staff assigned to the Los Osos Water Recycling Facility, a 1.2 MGD Class IV facility; the County Service Area (CSA) 18 Country Club wastewater treatment plant (WWTP), a 0.1 MGD Class II facility; the CSA 7A Oak Shores WWTP, a 0.1 MGD Class I facility; associated collection systems with the wastewater facilities and the sewer-only systems for CSA 1 Nipomo and the County Operations Center; and associated disposal and recycled water distribution systems.Click here for the full job description

The ideal candidate maintains a growth mindset with the strong ability to evaluate organizational effectiveness, improve procedures, create trust in relationships, and balance productivity with comradery among the team.The ideal candidate has strong technical, analytical, and administrative skills, can communicate effectively with speaking, listening and in writing; experience in budget development and long-range planning; experience with reading and interpreting plan sets and engineering recommendations; and well-versed in the regulatory, environmental, and industry challenges facing wastewater management today.
Education and Experience
Graduation from high school or general educational development (GED) certificate, AND: Six years of experience in wastewater operations and maintenance, three years of which must have been in a supervisory position.
Licenses and Certificates
Possession of a valid SWRCB Wastewater Treatment Grade WW II Operator certification at time of application. Sustained certification, including any required continuing education units is mandatory for continued employment. Failure to maintain a valid required certification will result in removal from the position unless a time extension is approved by the appointing authority prior to the expiration of the certification.A valid driver's license is required at time of application. A valid CALIFORNIA driver's license is required at the time of appointment and must be maintained throughout employment.

Must be willing and able to work alternating shifts and weekend work to provide supervisory coverage after normal workday or irregular and on-call emergency requests on nights, weekends, and holidays.
